I’m finally sorting through and examining some of the travel photography I’ve produced, but have let sit idle on my computer. It’s not like the old days, when you’d shoot up a bunch of film rolls, drop them off at the photomat and get your results in a few days to pour over actual prints. Now, we just shoot even more and let it accumulate on our hard drive. (note to self: check your back-ups!)
I pulled this image out because I’ve been wanting to play golf lately. When I WANT to play golf, the weather goes south, as it has the last two weeks. In 2008, I got the opportunity to play the No. 2 course at Gullane Golf Club in Scotland, while in Edinburgh for an oil and gas trade show. This was a common view for me most of that day–deep behind a steep-walled bunker.
I have always wanted to play a links-style course and this was more than I could handle. I shot a fair 45 going out and was completely worn out coming in, carding a 55. The wind was immense. It will blow you over. And you’re ready for that pint when you walk off the 18th green. But as exhausting a round as it was, it turned out to be exactly the round of golf I expected. Golf in its homeland.
